Yes, artificial turf is safe for pets as it is made from non-toxic materials. There are no harmful chemicals used to treat weeds and insects as there may be with natural grass. As well, the turf provides a safe play area that has no protrusions that could injure your pet. Because it is easy to clean, there is less chance your dog will come in contact with bugs and bacteria.
Artificial pet turf has drainage holes that allow urine to pass through to the soil below. However, if your pet poops on the turf, it requires clean up. Just as you would do with natural grass, you need to scoop the solids up and spray the turf off with water. To keep your turf looking and smelling good, we recommend using ProVetLogic Kennel & Turf enzymatic cleaner a few times a month to brighten the turf and eliminate any smells.
Unlike natural grass, artificial grass will not discolour when an animal urinates on it. If the area does not receive rain on occasion, hosing the area down with water will keep lingering urine smells away.
It is difficult to altogether remove pests like fleas and ticks. Artificial grass does not allow for these parasites to live inside the grass blades. However, it cannot guarantee 100 percent elimination. While there is no soil to support their nesting, accumulation of debris and leaves can create a conducive breeding environment. If you maintain a clean artificial lawn, then you can reduce the chances of fleas and ticks to a great extent.
Pet owners will agree it is not uncommon to find your pet peeing in the same spot every day. Sometimes you may notice a persisting odour even after hosing down the pet turf.
